Hygiene
Proper oral hygiene is essential to good oral health. The recommended hygiene regimen is brushing and flossing at least twice a day and using an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day. Professional cleanings are recommended every six months.
Children should be learning this routine from a very early age (as toddlers). Parents should be using either gauze or a small toothbrush on babies as soon as their teeth begin emerging. A baby’s first dental check-up should be approximately six months after their first tooth comes in (or roughly one year old).
Cleaning is more effective if proper oral tools are used. A toothbrush should be the correct size for the size and shape of your mouth and have soft bristles. The toothbrush should be thrown away every six months and a new one purchased.
If you are getting regular professional cleanings at Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Ellicott City, MD, Dr. Kim will give you a new toothbrush every six months, so you won’t forget to start using a new one. You will also get a small tube of toothpaste and floss (that are great for packing in your suitcase!).
Regular floss can be used, or flossing sticks are available for easy maneuvering inside the mouth. Flossing should not be a difficult task.
