Dental Sealants

Children are more vulnerable to developing cavities for many reasons.  They have smaller mouths, making it harder to brush even with a child’s smaller toothbrush.  Their teeth are more narrow, and the crevices can be deeper.

These crevices provide more opportunities for food and bacteria to sit on the tooth and develop tooth decay (cavities).  The back teeth are especially susceptible to cavities with the abundance of nooks and crannies and difficulty in brushing correctly.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) reports that dental sealants help prevent cavities in children up to the age of 18 (approximately 80% effective at two years and 50% effective at four years).

The application of dental sealants is very simple.  The sealant is a rubbery compound that is brushed into the crevices of the teeth with a small brush to help keep out food and debris.  The sealants are monitored during routine cleanings and can be reapplied if worn away or chipped.

Most dental insurances will cover the cost of sealants for children.  The staff at Family & Cosmetic Dentistry can help you verify your insurance coverage.
